s/t: and other poems
Let me tell you a little about myself. I’m not going to go for the usual “I was born in the year…” but rather offer some snippets that give you a feeling about me. In my twenties, I was a Renaissance dancer, performing at the fair currently held in Gurnee. In my forties I went back to a lifelong dream of being a poet and dived in head first into The Chicago Poetry Scene. I was really lucky because Chicago Poetry was undergoing a Renaissance (there we go with the Renaissance stuff again…) I had always lamented that I was too shy in my youth to be part of the tail-end of the Beatnik era– but here was a new Beatnik era bigger and better than ever! Reviews of my poetry were mixed– I both won slams and was almost “stomped” offstage, when the bar crowd didn’t go for my overly flowery verse. (Definition of stomping: if the crowd doesn’t like your poem, they will start softly stamping their feet, getting louder and louder as their disgust crescendos! Fortunately my poem was short, and I made a hasty departure from the stage before the stamping reached its forte.)
