Thomas Rumney of Mellfell (1764-1835) was of the Rumney family of ‘statesmen’ or ‘yeoman’ established in the parish of Watermillock, on the Cumbrian shore of Ullswater, certainly from the time of the earliest registers of that parish (1590) and probably for generations before. The editor, A.W. Rumney, was Thomas Rumney’s great-great-nephew.
