The volumes are heavily illustrated with steel engraved frontispieces, a total of 47 steel engraved plates, and a large number of wood-engraved text illustrations. The descriptive texts are by various authors; the illustrations and steel engravings are by various artists, including Granville Perkins, A. C. Warren, Harry Fenn, and Robert Hinshelwood. Full, dark brown leather with blind-stamped designs on both panels, and the title stamped in gold on the front panel. Four raised bands, gilt titling on the spine. Marbled end-papers; inner dentelles. All edges gilt.
