The Golden Legend
Henry Wadworth Longfellow
Pictorial cloth stamped in gilt and blind with central image of Elsie framed by foliage. Illustrated by Sidney N. Meteyard (1868-1947) with 25 tipped-in color plates with captioned tissue guards and elaborately ornamented title page printed in gilt. Meteyard-illustrated edition, with gorgeous illustrations from the Birmingham School Artist. Meteyard is best known for his stained glass, but across the board his work shows the influence of William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, and others who extended the Pre-Raphaelite approach beyond painting. The US issue is distinguished from the UK by the imprint and by the variant binding; the London edition depicts a castle rather than the heroine Elsie, as here.
