The Trail of the Lonesome Pine
John Fox, Jr.
One of the Kentucky native’s best works, about a young engineer trying to develop a coal mine in the lawless Kentucky mountains.
1936 Henry Hathaway film, with Sylvia Sidney as June Tolliver, Henry Fonda as Dave Tolliver, and Fred MacMurray as Martin Reed, as well as Nigel Bruce, Beulah Bondi, Fuzzy Knight (who sang the hit songs), and George “Spanky” McFarland. (This Paramount picture — first to be shot outdoors with the three-strip Technicolor process — was actually the third filming of Fox’s 1908 novel, following two silent versions.)
