“This book is the realization of a dream that John Hollander and Joanna Weber shared at a dinner conversation: to commission poetry based on works of art in the Yale University Art Gallery collection. Yale’s Tercentennial celebration with a focus on “Creativity at Yale” further shaped the plan, and John Hollander chose twenty-two Yale alumni poets to write on works of twentieth-century art at Yale University Art Gallery. These poems extend the appreciation of the images presented, deepening the artistic experience of objects in the Yale University Art Gallery’s collection of European, American, and African objects.”
